08:08: Awake and ready to get in the shower. I slept really well with earplugs in.
09:13: At breakfast. Here’s the origin of that quote, attributed to an IBM manager in popular culture that “the world will only need six computers”: A. S. Householder in the paper “Reminiscences of Oak Ridge” in Metropolis’ “A History of Computing in the 20th Century”, 1980.
“My own introduction to the high-speed digital computer … came in January 1947 at Harvard… I returned to Oak Ridge fully convinced that an electronic computer would be required. I had only the vaguest notion of for what, and in fact I could hardly imagine that the entire country could use more than half a dozen or so.”
2018 is the 80th anniversary of the 80 column card, introduced by IBM.
11:30: Planning my trek to München.
12:46:59
13:17: Done. I have two 30-plus kilometre days in store!
13:40: Heading into town now.
14:45:51
15:44: I had a light salad lunch at a delightful little café on a shady terace overlooking a canal, then started transcribing notebook entries from the end of April. My phone stopped responding while trying to present an autocorrect option. OK, we’re back to life now. Save early and often.
17:51:40
17:59: The café has closed. I’ll head back to the youth hostel. I’m in the process of transcribing 1 May.
18:30: Shahbaz and I headed out for dinner to “New Delhi” restaurant. We shared Chicken Jalfrezi (his choice!) and dhal makhani and rice. More great chats, and we exchanged contact details.
