Colmar

Saturday

07:07: Woke at 06:58 in time to kill my alarm before it went off. Earplugs in overnight and windows open meant I had a good sleep.

08:15: Out the door.

08:43: €23.90 for the youth hostel.

08:50: All sorted! I can return at 17:00 tonight. I think it’ll be a pleasure to hang around town today. Let’s find an omelette for breakfast.

09:14: At the breakfast café. Strolling around town is a joy now.

09:18: …except of course the kitchen is closed so they’re only serving bready breakfast. Oh dear.

10:15: Good old Google pointed me at a deli that also has a few tables. The friendly staff accommodated my request for an omelette. I’m sitting here blissfully digesting a three-egg omelette with ham, served on an iron pan and washed down with a large pot of English breakfast tea. My digestive tract is very grateful.

12:39: €11.53 in anti-fungals.

12:58: Sitting down to a salmon and spinach galette for lunch. This is much better than yesterday! I’ll spend the afternoon transcribing notes in a café somewhere. €14.80 with tea.

14:09: A delicious sweet crepe with caramelised apple and honey in a crêpe stube.1 It’s toasty warm in here and still cool and cloudy outside. I left my fleecy in my rucksack at the youth hostel and regretted it almost immediately. I’ve switched out the SD card from the camera as is suddenly got very slow to write to. I’ve swapped it for another class 10 16Gb card.

€5.90. Tea was free because I found a piece of transparent plastic in my crêpe.

16:50: €37.00 for a new food bag, tech socks and t-shirt. All grey. Low key.2

17:03: Back in town. The bus that only goes once an hour pulled up a minute after I arrived at the bus stop.

19:13: Shopping for dinner at MONOPRIX, €13.66, then a hot chocolate (€3.00) and Twitter interaction sitting on a restaurant terrace in the evening sun. I’ve also submitted an AirBnB booking for Freiburg when I discovered the youth hostel is €44 a night. Now I’m going to swing by MONPRIX again and see if I can buy another notebook, then back to the hostel for a scallion, tomato and parsley dinner with prune yoghurt and cracker breads.

20:35: I skipped the cracker breads. I’ll have them for lunch tomorrow. They’re light and they don’t go stale. Dunno why I didn’t pick them up before. I always consider them when I see them in the shop. So I had no cheese and no bread today — though I did eat a pancake.

22:45: AirBnB has fallen through. The host wants me to share with her 11 year old son. No thanks.

  1. Alsatian French is a weird hybrid of French and German!

  2. I’d found a DECATHLON on the outskirts of Colmar.
