From a field beyond Kirchseeon to a barn beyond Schonstett

Friday

06:25: I woke at 05:10 and 06:10. By 06:10, the sun was just above the horizon, so I’m rising before the temperature gets like a furnace. I slept quite well; I was woken by repeated thunderflashes, but it didn’t rain. This morning, it’s so warm that there’s no dew on the basha. A first, I think. My next town is Grafing. I think I’ll get breakfast there. It’s about five or six kilometres away.

07:08: Moving. My mood is good.

07:11:2707:11:27 07:11:4107:11:41 07:12:0007:12:00

07:13: Entering Osterseeon.

07:30: Stopping on a gravel track for breakfast of baguette and honey and maybe cheese. The sun is behind clouds and there’s a warm breeze blowing.

08:04: That was OK. I tore the bread so I didn’t need any utensils, so no washup. I ate most of the bread and half the cheese and a bit of honey. The cheese was a bit sweaty, but it tasted fine.

08:39: Entering Nettelkofen. Farmland and forestry. Sheep and deer.

08:48 Leaving Nettelkofen. Grafing 2 km.

08:55: Grafing town limit.

09:15: At a café bakery on the lovely town square.

09:25: €3.95 for a hot chocolate and a splat-biscuit with fruit embedded.

09:29: Map folded for this morning and afternoon’s journey. After Grafing, I don’t pass through any towns where I might get lunch, so I’ll need to pick up something here. I have nuts and emergency high-calorie foods so I might use them. Griesstätt is today’s destination (or at any rate a corner of a field beyond the town). A very different walking experience compared to yesterday’s urban hike.

09:40: Ok, time to hit the road again. It’s cloudy, which I’m enjoying. I can tolerate the relentless sun, but it’s draining.

09:56: That’s better. I doubled-back to visit the café’s facilities. I have a clearer head now.

10:06: I’m having to take a detour because of roadworks, which is bringing me past Rewe. I think I’ll get some bread and tinned fish.

10:17: €3.54 for bread and mackeral.

10:20: Moving again.

10:24:4810:24:48

10:37: Leaving Rewe. Jakobsneuharting 6 km.

11:20:2111:20:21 11:21:0811:21:08

11:41: Got my first very hazy view of the Alps, a couple of kilometres short of Jakobsneuharting.

11:41:5311:41:53 11:44:2811:44:28 11:47:1011:47:10

11:50: There’s a strong, warm breeze blowing from the west.

11:04: Jakobsneuharting village limit.

12:42: I hailed a family in their garden to ask them for a water refill. After a brief chat, they invited me to share their terrific lunch of Schnitzel, salad, chips, bread, coffee and ice-cream. Marianne, Hans, Stefan and Hans junior are a family of carpenters. They were curious and a little incredulous about my journey. It was a really joyful experience! They’ve asked for a postcard from Istanbul.

12:47: Leaving Jakobsneuharting.

14:11: Lehen. My mood is phenomenal. I’m full of beans after the food and goodwill, hospitality and generousity of the Deinzer family. The warm tailwind and milder weather all help too!

14:19: Leaving Lehen. Entering Bichl.

14:44: Leaving Eich. Katzbach 3 km.

14:47:1714:47:17 14:55:1114:55:11

15:17: Rumbles of thunder overhead, followed by short-lived deposits of fat drops.

15:32: Katzbach. A few more thundershower stops.

16:09: Crossing the river Inn. Very pedestrian. Hostile stretches of road.

16:13:3016:13:30

16:19: Swapped maps on the road. I think I’ll press on as far as I can today to make tomorrow a short day.

16:23:2116:23:21 16:32:5816:32:58

16:39: Griesstätt.

16:51: Leaving Griesstätt.

17:27:4217:27:42

17:34: Sheltering in the lee of a pretty farmhouse from another torrential thundershower that’s rolling through. The afternoon had cleared up beautifully after the last set. The farmer also gave me permission to take some water from his outside tap.

17:42: It’s blown over. Gorgeous fat thunderclaps.

17:49:2817:49:28 18:32:4418:32:44 18:54:5918:54:59

19:13: In a barn on a farm with Andy and Margritte. I knocked on the door, gave them the story and Andy came out to guide me out the back to select a spot. I chose a gravelly patch in the barn! I’m going to set up now.

I spent the evening lying down on my back reading, and was in the bag at 21:00.
