From Ersingen to an AirBnB in Neu-Ulm

Tuesday

08:06: At breakfast. I woke at 07:45. I’d put earplugs in to block out the dawn chorus. I slept reasonably well.

Everything is very damp this morning and the rain is due to start in earnest at 10:00. This Gasthaus is quite posh — my breakfast has just arrived on a three-tier tower. It’s all the usual suspects. No brown bread in evidence.

08:39: Great breakfast. I’m looking at routes to Ulm and destinations. It’s 18 km by the shortest route to the old town centre according to MAPS.ME.

09:48: Shortest path route to Ulm annotated on the map. Hitting the road now.

10:00: Almost out of Ersingen. Amazingly, the road is almost dry. Yesterday’s forecast indicated the rain would start about now and last all day.

10:11: At the town limit of Ersingen now. I’m walking parallel to a busy road with articulated trucks, so earbuds in!

13:24: I’ve just been charging on, walking through a landscape of industrial estates. I’m about 3.5 km from the centre of Ulm. I haven’t stopped for lunch yet — no options.

13:47: Stopped to book an AirBnB in Neu-Ulm, six kilometres from here. It’s chilly! I also need to charge my phone from the battery pack. Heading into the city for a late lunch now. The rain has continued to hold off.

13:58: Moving again.

15:08: It started pouring after I started moving again — and it’s cold! I’ve arrived in Neu-Ulm and popped into the first bakery I passed. They had a white roll draped with cheese as the only savoury option left, so I ate that, along with a little apple strudel Danish and a cup of weak black tea.

15:13: Navigating onwards to the AirBnB.

15:55: In the AirBnB.1

18:16: €28.84 on maps to get me to Augsburg in details and Salzburg at a coarse grain.

  1. This AirBnB was one of the most psychologically uncomfortable I’ve stayed in. My hostess let me in with minimal niceties, showed me my room and then resumed a phone call which must have taken half an hour for her to conclude. It turns out she lives alone and works from home in her painfully tidy apartment. She was outwardly friendly in a neutral kind of way but I had the feeling she was dead inside. She gave me the creeps. Anyway, as soon as she finished her call, I got a key from her and headed back into Ulm old city proper. The snaps here show the spectacular Gothic cathedral and the walk along the Danube back to Neu-Ulm at dusk.
