From Wexford town to the village of Kilrane

Lovely lazy start to the day - up at 07:45, washed and at breakfast at 09:00. Now I’m packing with a plan to find a hardware shop, then walk to Kilrane, 17km.

I spent €5.00 on gaffer tape, chocolate and a Patrick’s day wig. The glue was €7.99.

11:32 I’m fixing my walking pole and rucksack flaw. Also need to ring Mamma for a chat.

11:54 Chatted to Mamma for 20 minutes. Remember to blog about Ben’s mother of invention porridge recipes”.

12:19 Thinking of a scone for lunch before I set out for Kilrane.

12:38 Sitting down for tea and cake. €5.50.

13:00 On the road to Kilrane finally.

15:05 Scoffed the last of the halva at the first lay-by. Started well, but feet feel sore again. Not quite halfway I think.

15:47 Stopped at a petrol station with a mini supermarket for a cup of tea and ended up pre-emptively buying dinner as I assume Kilrane has no restaurants or shops and anyway I don’t want to pay restaurant prices. Tea and dinner of chick peas, kale, scallions and lemon juice and a bread roll cost me €5.70. Hopefully I’ll get to Kilrane by 17:00 or slightly after.

18:07 Arrived at the B&B1. The hostess came looking for me in her car. Herself and her husband were going out. Would have been useful to communicate that, but whatever.

22:26 I haven’t set foot outside my room since I arrived. The proprietress hadn’t checked in with me (assuming she’s back) which is probably for the best because I cooked a bean and kale salad with scallions and lemon juice in my room. Spoke to Aisling on the phone to arrange to meet tomorrow after breakfast, and then read about Normandy for an hour or two. I’m shattered. I’m about to get into bed. I forgot to wash my socks. I’ll do that now if the rad is on. Oh I also attempted to book two nights in a hostel in Cherbourg but the payment failed. Feeling a bit glum.

  1. As a special treat, Aisling booked me into a B&B for my last night in Ireland. We’d arranged that she’d come down to wave me off on the day of my departure. While I was in the B&B, she was visiting a friend who’s recently moved into a house right beside the ferry port.
