How long will it take to walk to the ferry port?

That’s the question I had to answer before booking a ticket to France. I also had to get a feel for the rhythms of tramping and make sure the gear I’m choosing to take is not complete garbage. Here’s how I figured out a picturesque route through the back roads of Dublin, Wicklow and Wexford to Rosslare.

I laid five OSI Discovery series maps out on the floor, folded over and lined up so I could see the entire route from my house to Rosslare Ferry Port. I stretched a length of thread over the map and zig-zagged a highlighter marker along the back roads located closest to the thread. That became my route!

It brought me over mountains and through villages, right off the beaten track to pretty places I’ve never been before.

And the answer? It takes six days to walk to Rosslare. I have confidence that my gear (and my body and psyche!) are up to the task. Bring on the big one.
