Today was Aisling’s 50th birthday. It also happened to be a Sunday and a public holiday, so practically every shop, restaurant, bar and café was shut. As if that wasn’t grim enough, the weather was freezing cold and it bucketed rain all day. A very special birthday, for all the wrong reasons!
Pissing rain.

Cakes for breakfast.
Everything’s shut. 12°C. Drizzle.
12:51: €14.60 for two hot chocolates and a champagne at Bistrot du Forum. Aisling miserable. Ben antsy.
Went home for me to put on warm clothes.1. Back out to FRAC, the modern art gallery, which was closed. Walked back into town, not talking. Walked to the Japanese artist’s chapel on the grounds of the Mumm champagne warehouse.
Pissing rain and cold.
Back in town, but everything’s closed because it’s after 18:002 and before 18:303.
We stop in Edgar Bistrot and have a terrible Pasta Bolognese4 (overcooked spaghetti, no seasoning in the Bolognese) and a mixed result “vegetarian tartar” which included a decent leafy pile, limp and waterlogged cold asparagus and a successful beetroot and cream cheese terrine. The chips were OK too. Leaving now, at 18:30. €55.10.
Still raining. Sun is splitting the sky in Dublin, Caroline tells Aisling via Viber.
