09:50: It’s my last day in Munich. I got up at 07:30, got washed dressed and packed, and changed rooms. I’m now in a four-bed dorm for tonight. There are two other lads in there this morning — a German and an American. I’ve had breakfast, now I’,m headed to the post office to post redundant maps to my mum., then I’ll head to the Alte Pinakothek. My current read is “From Airline Reservations to Sonic the Hedgehog”, Martin Campbell-Kelly’s circa 2000 history of the software industry in the US. It’s superb so far, but quite light.
11:00: Maps posted, with explanatory note. On the U-Bahn to HbF on the way to Theresienstraße.
11:48:01: Hendrik van Thulden, theologian. (1615)
11:50:20: Portrait of Jan Brant, the father of Rubens’ first wife Isabella. (1635)
12:04:56
12:05:07
12:30: Unfortunately, half of the Alte Pinakothek is closed — and it’s the half I was more interested to see. Heading for lunch now.
13:02: Highly satisfactory spinach burek with salad: <€5.00. Tea is on the house.
A back-of-the-envelope calculation to figure out how many days it’ll take me to get to a given destination, assuming I average 18 km/day and the route is 20% more crinkly than the crow-flies distance. 18 days to Jesenice is Slovenia.
16 days to Villach, in the Alps.
Eight days to Salzburg.
20:53: I spent the entire afternoon hanging around in cafés, reading. Dinner was spinach pide and salad in the last hour.
I was chatting with Aisling at one stage at it struck me at one point that I ought to hit the blog on the head. I’m fifty days behind and I’m not catching up, despite my efforts.1 I was really shocked when I picked up the rucksack this morning with everything in it except the electronics (and water of course). It was as light as a feather. So I’ve been thinking about the weight/utility trade-off of all of that stuff and I’ve come to the conclusion it doesn’t make sense to carry it another kilometre. That includes the bootable hard disk. I’ll post it all home tomorrow morning.
Twitter chimes in to tell me to give the blog a break.
Now I’m heading back to the hostel for an early night.
21:34: Back in the hostel. Every bed in this four-bed dorm now has an occupant. I actually did really well over the past week, having that six-bed dorm to myself for all but two nights.
What the double-fuck? I just spent the last week arsing about doing nothing in Munich! I think I spent an hour or two on updating the blog!↩
