A day in München buying maps and exploring the city

Friday

08:04: Up at 07:20. Washed, dressed. Now heading for breakfast. I feel vastly refreshed.

10:03: Chat with Aisling to help her reset her loaner phone and discussing where we’ll meet. She’ll probably fly to Bratislava and meet me in Zagreb. Now I’m heading into town to do some sightseeing and to buy maps. I may stay a third day.

Buchhandel Cousin Beatrix, Romanplatz

10:30: €15.60 on a ticket for the museum and a ticket for public transport for the day.

11:12: Map purchase and route planning

Stachus, Karlplatz

Maps: KOMPASS 159, 10, 291 get me from München to Salzburg

KOMPASS 67, 63, 61 get me from Salzburg to Villach and over the Alps to Jesnice

2801 and 2803 are higher scale maps of North-West Slovenia, covering Ljubljana.

€38.80 in maps to get me to Salzburg and an overview from Salzburg to Villach.

13:26: Map shopping done, heading for lunch.

14:00: I lost the fight with the underground system and instead I’m parked in an Afghan restaurant where I’m going to have spinach and rice for lunch.

15:52: Okay, moving again. I’m gonna check out the main square. Maybe have an ice-cream or baklava. Lunch was €12.00 for soup, main, Apfelschorle and three teas.

17:09: The animatronics in the Gothic building on Marienplatz are tacky and terrible. The music is out of tune and the hordes of people claustrophobia-inducing. I’ve hopped on a random U-Bahn to Sendlinger Tor. For some reason, on this trip I have no interest at all in doing touristy things.

17:29: Sitting in the sun on a chair provided by local retailers, I guess, eating a zwei-kugel-im-waffel chocolate and zitrone ice-cream. Now I’m thirsty. I think I’m going to hop on a random tram.

18:24: At the Viktualenmarkt. Much nicer, chilled vibe. Marienplatz is just tourist hell. Everywhere else in the old city is lovely. (Apart from the main shopping street, which could be a shopping street anywhere.)

I’m about to drink a dragon-green Gurken-smoothie.

19:03: Moving on. I explored the Viktualenmarkt which is buzzing with diners. Had a look at the fish in Nordsee but didn’t go for it because they had no chips and frankly the fish looked sad.

19:16: Müller (local Boots-alike) do small and cheap enough packages of shampoo and deodorant.

20:25: On the underground heading back to the youth hostel to freshen up before I head out for lentil soup and salad. I walked out of Müller earlier after trying to pay for some Autan insect repellent. The cashiers kept serving other folks who just barged in. I tossed the product aside and walked out.

20:54: Heading out for dinner.

Dinner was a mixed salad and a bowl of lentil soup. At 22:00 I came back to the hostel and read in the common room and the dorm until about midnight. My new room mate came in very late. I didn’t hear him.
