A day in München looking at historical computers and listening to free jazz

Saturday

08:14: Up and washed and dressed. I’m thinking of staying an extra two nights, making it five nights in all here. It’s the last major city I’ll get to be in for quite a while.

I’d like to catch some of the culture, plan my route, sit in cafés enjoying the atmosphere, update the blog and buy new shoes.

09:49: Booked in for another two nights. I was due to leave tomorrow morning (the 18th) but now I’ll check out on the 20th which is a Tuesday. €66.00.

10:50: On the tram into town. I’m going to see the computer exhibits at the Deutsches Museum today. In the afternoon I’ll go to the Pinakotheken.

11:17:3811:17:38 11:20:3011:20:30 13:00:56: “Series production of universal computers began with the UNIVAC I; the first model was begun in 1949 and completed in 1951. Altogether 49 of these computer systems were built. The selling price was a million dollars in 1957. The CPU (central processing unit) consists of over 975,000 individual components. Total weight 19 tons. Binary-decimal representation of numbers in excess-3 code; serial processing of the twelve fixed-point decimal digits. Single address instructions. Storage: mercury delay lines. Hardware: 5.600 vacuum tubes, 18,000 diodes, 300 relays. The computer was in operation at the Batelle Institute in Frankfurt from 19th October 1956 until 1963. The peripheral devices are not exhibited.”13:00:56: “Series production of universal computers began with the UNIVAC I; the first model was begun in 1949 and completed in 1951. 14:52: Stopped for lunch after a lovely morning looking at historical computers — a UNIVAC, an IBM 360/30, Zuse Z3 and Z4 and a Cray 1 supercomputer, among many others. Lunch was Currywurst, chips and an Apfelschorle for almost €10.00.

Turfed out on the street. Museums here are only open until 17:00. I’m going to head back into the city I think.

19:27: Found my way to the jazz club, but needed to take some money from an ATM, so went for a wander to also try to find a Turkish in the neighbourhood. Plenty of closed cafés, but no Turkish. Now I’m sitting in the lovely Biergarten next door to the jazz venue, about to have a small salad and an Apfelschorle.

19:56: In the venue. €15.00 for a piano, sax and bass trio. All the performers are female, which is super-unusual in jazz. The audience is tiny — perhaps twenty people.

22:21: Incredible free jazz performance! Completely improvised.
